Welcome to our artist residency open for artist mothers in the beautiful landscapes of Ostrobothnia, Finland. Take time to nurture your creativity and focus on your artistic projects in a peaceful and family friendly environment.

 

We invite mother artists, writers, and creatives to join us during our seasonal programs in spring and autumn. This residency offers the perfect space to reflect, explore, and innovate and bring your partner and children along the path.

Description:

Ruutin Kartano​​ Mothers in Art Residency is part of a family-run farm stay in the charming rural setting of Laihia, Finland. Our nurturing environment is ideal for artist moms seeking inspiration and growth in their creative pursuits.

 

The Location at Granny's Cottage:

 

Surrounded by fields and far forests, our residency invites you to connect with nature and find inspiration in the tranquil setting and child friendly environment. Enjoy the warmth of a traditional wood-heated sauna, an experience deeply rooted in Finnish family culture, or cooking local food together in the 'Kota' grill house, both located in the surrounding garden of the cottage.

 

Accommodation:

Granny's Cottage offers two bed rooms along with a living room, kitchen and bathroom on the lower floor.  And a spacious upper-floor workspace ready for all types of artistic activities like painting, writing or composing new art. Next to the work space you'll find a cosy kids corner for playing or resting and a separate two bed bedroom.

You are welcome to bring your partner and children, allowing you to share this enriching experience together.

Workspace:

​

• Spacious Layout: The upper room allows for freedom of movement and the ability to spread out your materials.

• Movable Tables: The workspace includes movable tables that can be rearranged to suit your specific project requirements. 

• Desk Area: A sturdy desk is provided for focused work, whether you’re jotting down ideas, sketching, or typing away.

• Natural Light: A west-facing window provides natural light. The view of the sunset can be beautiful.

• Loom for Textile Arts: For those interested in weaving, an antique traditional loom is available, allowing you to explore the art of textile creation.

• Durable Flooring: The hard-use flooring is designed to withstand the demands of various artistic activities, ensuring that you can work confidently without concern for wear and tear.​

IMPORTANT Guidelines​

Duration of residency:

It is self-funded and self-directed, and can last 4 weeks during October 2025. ​

​​

Fees include the full house with three private bedrooms, use of the upper floor studio, a shower room with toilet, kitchen, dining room/living room and garden sauna and grill house.

​

4 weeks during October 2025 for 1 artist mother and family

(In total up to 6 people) : 1400 €.

This special residency fee does exclusively apply to the October 2025 Open Call!​

Environmental policies:

This open call is for all professional creative practitioners working in non-toxic media. We ask you to use energy sparingly in the interests of the environment and use wood fired stoves for primary heating.

​

Transportation:

The residency is located in a rural area 10 minutes (by car) away from Laihia Village and 20 minutes (by car) away from Vaasa City, Finland.

There is limited access to public transportation and we can´t provide a car.

Bicycles can be borrowed from Ruutin Kartano (gravel roads).

(In total up to 6 people) : 1400 €.

Your application must include the following documents,

 incomplete applications will be disregarded.

​

• Copy of a valid ID: Passport or identity card

• CV (good to including solo or group shows, projects, residencies, and publications) 

• Work Portfolio or Instagram account

• Motivational Letter (Maximum 1000 words): Your motivation and a short description of the ideal outcome of the residency.

The artist in residency for October 2025 will be informed per E-mail
